The end result of a good Library Technician Resume

Finding a Qualified Resume Writer for a...
Library Technician Resume

If you're a Library Technician or Library Assistant, you know what your job entails. You handle library-to-patron transactions such as book loans, maintain library print and media collections, sort out and restocks returned library materials, process loans between libraries, sign up new library patrons and make library cards, help library patrons locate resources, tend to all customer questions and concerns, perform basic computer maintenance, aid with planning special library events such as book sales, answer phone calls, and do general administrative tasks.

Whew.

But the question now is, how do you translate that information onto a resume in such a way as to motivate a hiring manager into picking up the phone? If you're not sure, that's OK. Most people aren't used to thinking about their jobs in a promotional sense. But a good resume writer? Well, that's what they do.

Former recruiter David Alan Carter recommends the following resume services for Library Technicians or Assistants... each with a Better Business Bureau score of "A" or better.

Considering a Career Move into Library Assisting?

If you're considering a move into library assisting from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment. Transitional resumes are some of the most difficult resume projects as they require a writer knowledgeable in at least two professions -- and the ability to identify transferable skills from one to the other.

Before you hand off that resume assignment, make sure you know enough about the job of a Library Technician to... a) really want it, and b) be able to step up to the plate. Here's a quick overview (more information at Wikipedia - Library Technician):

What You'll Do: As a library technician or assistant, you'll help librarians with administrative tasks. Your primary duties will include the organizing, preparing, and processing of library materials and collections. You will also handle book and media check-outs and provide general customer service when required.

Most library technicians work for local or state governments, elementary and secondary schools, and public or private colleges and universities. Much of the work is done indoors at a desk or in front of a computer unless you are assigned to a bookmobile. Some standing, walking, crouching, climbing, and stretching is necessary for restocking and organizing shelves.

Like the majority of library assistants, you will probably work part-time, but having a full-time schedule is not at all uncommon. If you are employed in a school, you will normally work during school hours.

Education and Training: A high school diploma is required of all library technicians, but most have post-secondary education. Some colleges offer certificates or associate's degrees in library technology, and this is one of the most common educational paths. Having prior experience in an office setting would be advantageous for prospective library technicians.

The Future: The Library Technician profession is expected to grow at about 9-10% through 2020.

The Pay: Hourly wages for Library Technicians and Assistants in the U.S. range from $8.64 to $22.59 per hour, with the average median hourly wage hitting $14.74 in 2012 as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That works out to $30,600 annually.

Still interested in pursuing a position in Library Assisting? Got the qualifications? Great. The next step is to prepare for a consultative telephone interview with your resume writer. Treat the coming job search like the business it is, and you'll do fine.

Best of luck,
