For those looking to buy or rent a new home, you help them find one in the geographical location of their choice based on their preferences. Considering a Career Move into Real Estate Sales?

If you're considering a move into Real Estate Sales from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment. Transitional resumes are some of the most difficult resume projects as they require a writer knowledgeable in at least two professions -- and the ability to identify transferable skills from one to the other.

Before you hand off that resume assignment, make sure you know enough about the job of a Real Estate Sales Agent to... a) really want it, and b) be able to step up to the plate. Here's a quick overview (more information at Wikipedia - Real Estate Broker):

What You'll Do: Real estate sales agents typically: advertise properties to be sold, give potential buyers advice on market value and reasonable offers, do research to gain an understanding of the local real estate market and pricing, hold open houses and other special events to promote properties, make offers to sellers on behalf of the buyers and negotiate deals, answer phone calls and prepare various technical documents, and give tours of properties for sale.

While you will probably have a designated office to handle paperwork and take calls, much of your time will be spent traveling to check out listings and meet with clients. It is common to work more than 40 hours per week and at odd hours of the day to accommodate the needs of your clients.

Succeeding at the job is based heavily on your communication and interpersonal skills. If you are outgoing, friendly, and convincing, you'll probably love your job and make a good living doing it.

Education and Training: Real estate sales agents must have a high school diploma in addition to a real estate license in order to work. Requirements for becoming licensed are different from state to state, but most expect that you are at least 18 years of age, pass a background check, take and successfully pass a number of state-certified real estate courses, and pass a final exam. You are also expected to have at least one year of experience working in the real estate industry before getting licensed. Depending on where you live, you will have to renew your license every few years.

While having a high school diploma is mandatory, employers prefer agents who have college degrees. Many community colleges offer associate's degree programs or certificates in real estate, and some universities have four-year bachelor's degree programs in real estate. You will study subjects such as: business administration, finance, economics, accounting, marketing, real estate law and more.

The Future: The Real Estate Sales Agent profession is expected to grow at about 11% through 2020.

The Pay: Annual salaries for Real Estate Sales Agents in the U.S. range from $25,500 to $161,800, with the average median annual wage hitting $39,100 in 2012 as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
