The end result of a good School Counselor Resume

Finding a Qualified Resume Writer for a...
School Counselor Resume

If you're a School Counselor, you know what your job entails. You are responsible for helping students do well in school. Unlike tutors who actually aid students with their studies, you offer advice on a wide range of topics ranging from which classes to choose for the coming semester to how to deal with bullies.

You often deal with students who have social issues that could come from their cultural backgrounds, family life, group of friends, disorders and disabilities, and more. Giving career counseling is another big part of the job.

The question is, now that you're looking for a position, can you find a resume writer who understands your occupation? A writer who talks the language of therapy, individual and group counseling techniques, and WorkKeys (job skill assessment system)? A writer who can craft a School Counselor resume that puts your best foot forward and scores the interview in a highly competitive marketplace? Former recruiter David Alan Carter recommends the following resume services for School Counselors... each with a Better Business Bureau score of "A" or better.

Considering a Career Move into School Counseling?

If you're considering a move into School Counseling from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment. Transitional resumes are some of the most difficult resume projects as they require a writer knowledgeable in at least two professions -- and the ability to identify transferable skills from one to the other.

Before you hand off that resume assignment, make sure you know enough about the job of a School Counselor to... a) really want it, and b) be able to step up to the plate. Here's a quick overview (more information at Wikipedia - School Counselor):

What You'll Do: If you plan on becoming a school counselor, prepare to work with a whole spectrum of individuals who come from all types of ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. Your job would entail fixing behavioral and social problems that prevent the students from showing satisfactory academic progress. This involves holding group and individual counseling sessions that help the students build study skills, aiding them with planning their career goals and how to get there one step at a time, examining their current academic progress and potential, working with parents and the school administration to help students do better, offering optional classes on how to succeed in school, looking out for signs of abuse and neglect, and giving students additional outside resources for further help with any issue that they might be having.

Those who are best suited for the job are likely very understanding individuals who have true compassion for other people. Only such counselors can give sincere advice to their students. Having excellent written and oral communication skills is a must as well. Counselors who listen well often are the ones who offer the most effective solutions to a problem

Education and Training: The minimum requirement for becoming a school counselor is having a master's degree. Ideally, a degree in school counseling is obtained before applying to the job, but master's degrees in similar fields including psychology and sociology may be considered as well. Master's of school counseling degree programs usually ask you to pick a concentration, such as career counseling, to specialize in.

Before completion of the degree program, extensive practical experience is required. This usually means spending several hundred hours participating in an internship or volunteer program.

In addition to an advanced degree, most states require that you obtain a state certification in order to practice. Certification generally requires a few thousand hours of supervised work experience, the passing of one or more licensing exams, and ongoing additional coursework.

The Future: The School Counseling profession is expected to grow at about 19% (or 53,000 new jobs)through 2020, propelled by increasing student enrollment in elementary, middle and high schools across the country.

The Pay: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $53,300 for 2010, with the top 10% pulling in $86,200.

Still interested in pursuing a position as a School Counselor? Great. The next step is to prepare for a consultative telephone interview with your resume writer. Treat the coming job search like the business it is, and you'll do fine.

Best of luck,
