Your primary task is to sell insurance to customers to provide a level of financial support in times of need, and to generate business and profits for your employer. Considering a Career Move into Insurance Sales?

If you're considering a move into insurance sales from either a closely related field or from a totally unrelated profession, you'll be looking for a transitional resume -- and a talented resume writer to handle the assignment. Transitional resumes are some of the most difficult resume projects as they require a writer knowledgeable in at least two professions -- and the ability to identify transferable skills from one to the other.

Before you hand off that resume assignment, make sure you know enough about the job of an Insurance Sales Agent to... a) really want it, and b) be able to step up to the plate. Here's a quick overview (more information at Wikipedia - Insurance):

What You'll Do: Insurance sales agents typically: contact potential customers over the phone to try to make a sale, meet with interested parties to determine if they are eligible for certain insurance plans based on various personal and financial factors, offer in-depth overviews of available coverage types, make plan recommendations depending on the needs and preferences of the customer, suggest modifications to customers who have existing plans with the company, perform miscellaneous office duties, aid in claim settlement and more.

Selling insurance usually means that you'll work for an insurance carrier or a brokerage that supplies many types of insurance from many different providers. Much of your work day will be spent in an office setting consulting on the phone with customers and potential customers, doing research on the computer, or filling out paperwork. You'll probably work full-time according to a very flexible schedule, so working odd hours isn't uncommon. Meeting with clients may require occasional travel.

Education and Training: To become an insurance sales agent, possessing a high school diploma or GED is a must. However, most agents have a two-year or four-year college degree, and many employers prefer and only hire those who do. Taking courses in public speaking, psychology, law, finance, economics, and business should prove very beneficial for the job.

After formal schooling, you must get a state license before you can practice. This usually means completing accredited coursework, passing a state exam, and getting ongoing education every several years. Although formal schooling is highly recommended, much of the training will be provided upon hire.

As a new employee, you will likely work under direct supervision of an experienced insurance agent for the first several months to a year.

The Future: The Insurance Sales profession is expected to grow at about 22% through 2020.

The Pay: Annual salaries for Insurance Brokers and Sales Agents in the U.S. range from $25,900 to $115,300, with the average median annual wage hitting $48,100 in 2012 as per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
